Derek Bauman is a lifelong public servant, retired police office, and a candidate for Cincinnati City Council.
He was awarded the Medal of Valor after suffering a career-ending injury during a felony arrest. He led fundraising efforts that led to over $207,000 being raised for the family of slain Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim.
Derek grew up in a working class family, his mom working 3rd shift in a plastic factory, while his dad worked in the United States Air Force and then retired to preach in his church. Derek graduated from the University of Akron and received two master degrees in Education and Business Administration.
A current Over the Rhine homeowner, Derek also owns property and has rehabbed homes in East Price Hill and the West End, where he also raised over $15,000 to save the West End Red’s youth baseball program. A current coach and volunteer for the league, Derek is a tireless advocate for inner-city young people.
Derek is currently the Vice-Chair of All-Aboard Ohio, a 501c3 advocacy organization supporting public transportation across Ohio. He is a lifetime member of the NAACP, chairing the local transportation committee, where he introduced a resolution in support of public transportation that was then adopted by the national NAACP as their official policy.
